While they serve as a secondary factor in standard authentication flows, they can also replace traditional passwords as a primary authentication factor in Passwordless flows. In many IAM systems, mobile authentication apps operate in a "passive" mode, where identity provisioning requires manual user intervention, such as scanning a QR code. In such cases, certain cryptographic values sent to the mobile app cannot be managed remotely.
